A Sign of Hope at the Rite of Election 2013
St Patrick’s Cathedral was abuzz with warmth and joy as almost a thousand people gathered on Sunday 17 February for the annual Rite of Election. Over 304 catechumens and candidates, accompanied by their families and fellow parishioners, came together to publicly make known their intention to join the Catholic Church. It was an inspiring event not only for those part of the RCIA process but also for the wider community.

As Archbishop Denis Hart said in his homily, “It is a real joy to welcome today the catechumens and candidates of the Archdiocese for the Rite of Election. This is an important step on your journey towards baptism or reception into the Church. Here in the Cathedral we hope you will see clearly that you do not make your journey alone, but with many brothers and sisters who have also heard the call of Christ to follow him wherever he leads. We are all very grateful to you. We welcome and congratulate and thank you, because you remind us in a special way that the Church is a pilgrim people, constantly led by God, constantly made new.”
This liturgy celebrates the Church’s discernment of the call of God to the catechumen and the catechumen’s co-operative response to the call. From this rite, the catechumens and candidates, now known as “the elect”, consciously prepare for the celebrating of their Christian commitment through the sacraments of initiation.
